Florida’s Lake County School Board suspended social studies teacher Jerry Buell for posting comments on Facebook about gender-segregated marriage. In reaction to New York’s recent legalization of same-sex marriage, the former Mount Dora High School’s Teacher of the Year wrote he “almost threw up.”
The Orlando Sentinel reports that “On the same July 25 Facebook post he said same-sex marriages were part of a ‘cesspool.’”
Buell explained that he opposes homosexual activity, not people with same-sex attraction. “I’ve had kids that I’ve known that have been homosexuals,” he said. “They know that I don’t hate them. I love them.”
Would Buell be suspended if he said heterosexuality made him want to vomit? Would he be in the news if he called Christianity a “cesspool”?
Why the double standard?
Is freedom of speech more free for gay rights activists than for heterosexual rights activists?
