Students at Essex High School in Vermont showed strong support for Cole Peterson age 15, who was bullied for being bisexual. On Sunday, two freshmen harassed him verbally, then physically at Maple Street Park. On Friday anti-bullying advocates staged a sit-in at EHS to demonstrate to bullies that such behavior will not be tolerated.
The Burlington Free Press reports that 300 participated in the sit-in. For safety reasons, those students not enrolled in EHS protested outside the school. Some came from as far away as Franklin to show solidarity with Cole and the LGBT community. Cole said he felt "amazing."
“I feel really loved and cared for, and I feel like we can make a difference with this, and I really hope that we can change something.”
Police and school administrators are continuing their investigation of Sunday’s incident, which happened outside of school grounds.
As one button slogan proclaims: “bullying stops here.”
