Video: Family Research Council seeks debate not hate from SPLC

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said calling his organization a hate group is "reckless labeling."  He made it clear that they hold the gunman, Floyd Lee Corkins II responsible for the shooting at FRC headquarters.  Perkins also believes name-calling from organizations such as SPLC encourage hatred.

Fox news anchor Megyn Kelly noted that Corkins entered FRC with a "9 mm handgun, two additional mags of ammo and reportedly fifteen sandwiches from Chick-fil-A."

Perkins said, "Let me be very clear here that Floyd Corkins was responsible for the wounding of one of our colleagues and a one of my friends yesterday here at the Family Research Council.  But I believe he was given license to do that by a group such as Southern Poverty Law Center who labeled us a hate group because we defend the family and we stand for traditional orthodox Christianity."

"There's no room for that in a society such as ours that is governed by a constitution and where we shape our laws through elections and through public policy debates.  And I think it's time for people to realize what the Southern Poverty Law Center is doing with their reckless labeling of organizations that they disagree with."

Kelly:  "You were unhappy with that designation [hate group] and you asked for a debate with the SPLC.  What was their response?"

Perkins:  "Silence.  They didn't say anything.  They don't want to debate.  That's what this is all about.  It's about marginalizing and ultimately silencing those they disagree with."

"It's not just us they did it to."

Will the SPLC rise to the occasion and join in a civil debate about redefining marriage?

Stop the hate.  Let's debate.

  1. YOu do realize that the FRC was labelled a hate group because of the following:

It’s a group that has advocated for the criminalization of homosexuality, called for LGBT people to be exported from the U.S., and has pushed dangerous lies trying to link being gay to pedophilia.

You can't tell me that there isn't at least a little bit of animus behind the FRC, can you?

And again, their classification as a hate group does not excuse what was done, as the shooting was a heinous action taken by a crazed individual.

    2. The FRC wants to protect people from policies such as those espoused by gay rights activist Daniel Viaarreal at Queerty who wrote: "We want educators to teach future generations of children to accept queer sexuality. In fact, our very future depends on it...Recruiting children? You bet we are...I and a lot of other people want to indoctrinate, recruit, teach, and expose children to queer sexuality ...And I would very much like for many of these young boys to grow up and start f***ing men. "

    3. Wow, completely not addressing what Tony said...that's good, right? Kinda proves my point :)

So to address what Daniel said: would you have him said "We want to teach children to reject queer sexuality?" That would be very hateful and self-loathing, and I don't think it would be a very nice thing of him to say. What he said is basically preaching tolerance and acceptance.

Would you rather him say "I want none of these children to grow up and be gay"? That also seems self-loathing. The key there is "grow up"; notice he doesn't want children to have anything to do with men.
